Abstract

The Air Preheater is a vital piece of equipment in the combustion cycle because it functions to improve the thermal efficiency of the boiler by utilizing exhaust gas heat to preheat the combustion air. The problems that occur include drive motor failure, gearbox damage, and incompatibility in the protection and monitoring systems.


Through a re-engineering approach, an evaluation of the design was carried out, along with improvements to the drive component specifications, optimization of the lubrication system, and refinement of the protection and alarm systems. The implementation of these modifications aims to reduce the potential for forced outages, increase operational reliability, and extend the equipment’s service life. The evaluation results show an improvement in APH operational stability and a significant reduction in mechanical disturbances. Therefore, the re-engineering of the Air Preheater drive system has proven to be effective in supporting improved performance and reliability of the power plant unit as a whole
